Gödény halom, TájGazda

The single lowland plains is broken here and there by prominent hills, called Cumanian mounds. The locals gave a special attention to these hills throughout history.

It is still considered important by research in points of scenic, archaeological and botanical aspects. In addition, several historical events, legends, beliefs, memories from literature and ethnographic curiosities related to them.

Archaeological studies support the idea that these places served as a burial places or could be even watch sites or dwellings as well. These hills were structures of unknown age and origin and made by humans. Also, they have been integral parts of the lowland for centuries. They probably formed in times before conquest.

Békésszentandrás, the settlement of the southernmost county in Hungary, can boast the biggest Cumanian mound of Central-Europe, the Gödény-hill which is the triple border-hill at the same time. It marks the county boundaries of Békés, Csongrád and Szolnok. Old maps, documents reported that several thousands of mounds had been standing in the Great Plains once. Their number has been reduced over time. Previous records give an account of 13 mounds close to Békésszentandrás, from which only eight ones remained for now.

The heap lies in the floodplain of Triple-Körös, in a parched field of that. It was named after the birds belong to the Pelecanidae. Namely, large number of Dalmatian pelicans were living here when water was covering the area.

The height of the hill above sea level is 319.09 ft and the circumference of the mantle is approximately 0.09 mile. It lost from its height over the years, a part of that had taken away for building dams and roads. It served as an assembly scene of Vértessy-peasant uprising in 1735. Due to the size of that, it may be a resting place of a well-being person with high prestige. The heap and its surroundings are under archaeological protection. Research is being carried out in the field even today. The vegetation is made up of unbroken turf. Its utilization takes place by occasional grazing.

You can find the Furugy-mound, Kiss András-mound, Bika-mound, Black-mound, Atalak-mound and even more mounds in the region. These have been carried away over time.
